The War of 1812 was fought in 1812-1815 between the United States of America and the British Empire. A US invasion of Canada was repelled, the British consequently invaded the US. The peace treaty left the boundaries between the USA and the British Empire unchanged.

Immediate causes for the U.S. declaration of war were the impressment (conscription) of US citizens into the Royal Navy and a series of trade restrictions that the U.S. contested as illegal under international law, and alleged British military support for American Indians who were hostile to the United States.

Peace came after a great American victory at New Orleans, producing a sense of euphoria regarding a "second war of independence." In Canada, British imperialism was strengthened. Britain, focused on Napoleon, paid little attention.
