Michael Dwayne Vick (born June 26, 1980, in Newport News, Virginia) is a suspended National Football League (NFL) quarterback under contract with the Atlanta Falcons team.

Vick as an inner-city youth became a stand-out player in Newport News Public Schools, and attended Virginia Tech on a football scholarship. He declared for the 2001 NFL Draft and played professionally, setting records for performance and the financial arrangements of his contracts and commercial product endorsement deals. As late as 2006, Vick was characterized as "reportedly one of the top 10 richest athletes in the United States."

In April 2007, discovery of an elaborate dog fighting complex he owned in Surry County, Virginia led to criminal investigations by state and federal authorities, massive publicity, suspension from his team, loss of his promotional agreements, and criminal charges. In August 2007, a U.S. federal district court convicted him and several co-defendants of criminal conspiracy and sentenced him to serve a 23-month prison sentence. He is being held in the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Vick is also under indictment for two related Virginia state felony charges for dog fighting and animal cruelty. He is expected to be transported from federal prison to appear before a Surry County judge on November 25, 2008, and plead guilty to both charges. However, in return, he is not expected to be sentenced to any state jail or prison time. Resolving the state charges is a prerequisite to entering a federal half-way house program, a procedure often used for transitioning prisoners near completion of their sentences.

As a result of discovery of the dog fighting ring and subsequent events, his financial affairs were severely impacted by lost income, legal expenses, litigation, and mismanagement by a series of friends and financial advisers. That led to a personal reorganization bankruptcy filing in federal court in July 2008. His attorneys have told the court they have been unable to complete efforts to account for large portions of his funds during the preceding 2 years, an effort they said was still in progress more than 4 months after the initial filing.

While in prison, Vick's income was reduced to wages of less than a dollar a day, plus a small amount of interest earned on a single modest investment account. During this same time, his attorneys estimated that he has been spending $30,000 a month to support his fiancée and their 2 daughters, a former girlfriend and his son with her, his mother, and his brother Marcus. On November 13, 2008, his attorneys told the bankruptcy judge that Vick "has every reason to believe that upon his release, he will be reinstated into the NFL, resume his career and be able to earn a substantial living."
